“While 68% of New Yorkers think it best to hire a lawyer when injured in an accident since they are concerned insurance companies would not provide a fair settlement, a majority, 57% believe a contingent fee of 33% is too much,” said Don Levy, SRI’s Executive Director. “Forty percent don’t care how much lawyers make since victims could never negotiate with insurance companies and the court system, but 59% believe personal injury lawyers take far too much money and leave too little for their clients and over three-quarters, 77%, are in favor of limiting the percentage of a contingent fee that lawyers could charge their clients.”
